Should Slot Machine Apps use Skeuomorphism?

What is Skeuomorphism?

It is a design philosophy of making App designs resemble the corresponding physical object.
1. If you are making a flashlight app, then make the design and buttons resemble an actual physical flashlight
2. If you are making a radio app, make the design layout resemble a retro radio with the same sort of buttons and dials
3. If you are making a shopping app, make the design and check out process and purchase experience match what you would find in a grocery store or a department store
It’s a super interesting design philosophy and one which Apple, in particularly, used to really love.

Benefits of Skeuomorphism
1. The user is familiar with the physical world design
  - When the App uses a similar design and similar buttons and similar elements, everything is easy and intuitive for the user
2. The user is very familiar with the real world scenarios and user experience
  - Whatever things a user would do in your App, have precedent in the real world
  - Using Skeuomorphism and making design and user experience match the real world design means users are repeating what they have done hundreds of times before (perhaps thousands of times before)
    
    It feels very comfortable and comforting and easy
3. [In Many Cases] Real world designs have been arrived at after thousands of iterations. They are sometimes very close to ‘perfect design’
  - When your App matches that design, it is very likely to be close to ‘perfect design’
4. Skeuomorphic design is often very beautiful
  - Again, real world designs are designs we have after many, many iterations
  - Many real world designs, especially retro ones, are very beautiful
  - Repeating those designs in your Apps creates a very beautiful app
Disadvantages of Skeuomorphism
1. Real World design will sometimes not translate into an App
  - This is perhaps the single biggest problem
  - Just because it works and looks good in the real world, does not mean it will work and look good in an App
2. Skeuomorphism means missing out on the opportunity to Improve the Design and the User Experience
  - If an App just takes the best real world design and replicates it, you are missing out on the opportunity to make a better design
  - Please Note: In many cases, the real world design is created after decades or even centuries of improvements. So, there might not be much room to improve
3. Skeuomorphism often means not being able to leverage the advantages of modern devices and modern technology
  - If you are re-creating a real world design, you are giving up on the possibilities that modern technology offers
  - The pain of having to learn a brand new design might be a one time pain. The benefits of using newer design might lead to consistent and daily benefits – which make the one time pain worthwhile
4. Skeuomorphism requires top level design talent to create and top level programming talent to implement
  - It’s surprisingly hard to re-create top quality real world design
  - Often there are world class user experience experts and world class domain area experts with 20, 30, 40, 50 years of experience who have perfected real world design
    
    How do you match that skill and experience?
Should Slot Machine Apps use Skeuomorphism?

In 80% to 90% of cases – Yes.

These are interesting questions because, as opposed to most other game development and app development areas, there is almost no one sharing their journey of building Slots Apps or building a Slots Apps company.

How we would go about things if we had $10 million and 5 years to make fun and beautiful Slots Apps

This is how we would do it (and, coincidentally, how we are doing it, albeit with less than $10 million).

First 2 Years – Year 1 & 2 are Finding The Right Market and The Right Product for The Right Market

First, spend the first 2 years in Market Research and Product Market Fit research on two fronts

First Front -> Existing Market & Existing Products that are successful
1. 1st team does comprehensive research on what existing Slots Apps are doing well, how much money they are making, whether the customers are happy, and every possible aspect
2. Focus on which are the highest quality slots apps
3. Focus on which are the highest grossing slots apps
Second Front -> Existing Customer Research
1. 2nd team does deep research into customers’ motivations and happiness levels
2. What makes customers happy with a slots app
3. What makes customers spend money on a slots app
4. What makes customers recurring customers and not burn out or get bored
5. What makes customers consistently happy
These two fronts are equally important.

An important caveat – We would, under no circumstances, try to create a brand new area within Slots.

Why not? Because R&D is for established companies. If you are a new company then go to a proven market and go to a proven sub-market within that market.

Create a product that ALREADY has a market.

After you’ve made money, then you can try and create visionary products. Please don’t forget that even Apple made iPods and entered a known and proven market. Then they entered mobile phones, which was another proven market.

You aren’t Alexander Graham Bell and you don’t have to invent the telephone. Do what is already proven to work.

Next 2 Years – Years 3 and 4 are making The Best Possible Slots App for a Proven Market

This is the really tough part.

Make EXACTLY what is proven to work in the existing market.

Avoid all distractions. Avoid all ideas for new features and new twists.

Make Exactly what makes customers happy and makes you money

This is exceedingly simple. You have to make a very high quality version and your vision of what product is proven to work.

You obviously add tons of quality and your own soul into the product. At the same time, it must be a PROVEN product which has a PROVEN market.

5th Year – Year 5 is launching and then starting the process of Improving the Product to do better and better

Year 5 is when the product is finished (hopefully in very high quality) and when you launch the product and start serving customers and start making money.

From this point, Year 5 and ever after, is just a beautiful positive cycle of
1. Improving the Product based on customer feedback and customer behavior
  - Whether or not customers spend money on your product is the biggest data point
2. Improving the quality of the product
3. Getting better and better at serving customer needs and listening to customers
4. Getting better and better at making money from customers in a win-win manner
  - Customers should be getting good value for the money they spend
  - Slots app company should be getting good and reasonable money and profits for the value they provide

Retention Figures for Slot Machine Apps

Warning: I’m neither an expert on Slots Apps Retention nor on Slots Apps Retention statistics. Now, to the post ->

It’s really hard to get data on Retention Figures for Slot Machine Apps. The figures I’ve seen mentioned are
1. Only 10% retention after 2 weeks
2. 8% retention after a month
Obviously, the large slot machine app companies have their internal data. They don’t seem to be willing to share.

You can get some data from App Data companies such as AppAnnie.com and SensorTower.com.

How does Slot Machine Apps’ 10% after 2 weeks and 8% after one month Retention Data compare with other Apps?

There are some interesting data points
1. Gacha Games have similar retention rates of 10% after a month
2. Low Quality Casual Play games have much lower retention rates of just 1% to 2% after a month
3. Non Game Apps can have very high retention rates (social media apps and any apps with network effects)
4. Non Game Apps without network effects can have very low retention rates. For Example: Utility apps with retention rates below 5% after one month.
All things considered, Slot Machine Apps do have an immense opportunity to improve in terms of retention rate. It is unrealistic to expect retention rates like social media apps (as those have network effects).

At the same time -> Slot Machine App retention going higher than the current 8% retention rate (after a month) should be possible. Perhaps it is one of the biggest opportunities.

We have seen some Slot Machine Apps use social features to try to get network effects working in their app. I do not see any evidence that any company has been able to make it work.

That being said, a tremendously high percentage of slots apps companies push their slot machine apps as ‘social casino apps’ so they do seem to care a lot about the ‘social’ aspect.

2. Perhaps it should have a reference to Las Vegas or Macao or some casino destination
3. Perhaps it should have images of casinos
4. Perhaps it should have images of slot machines
5. Perhaps it should have the Slot Machine company’s branding
6. Perhaps it should be very bright and jazzy like a Vegas slot machine
7. Perhaps it should be animated to make it more appealing
8. Perhaps it should have some slot machine symbols such as cherries and horsehoes and 777 or 888
The Loading Screen is The First Impression of clients/users. So it would be nice to get some reassurance
1. Yes, this is a slot machine app
2. Yes, this is a high quality app (as conveyed by very high quality graphics)
3. Yes, this is the same app I downloaded and the same company
  - In addition, to branding, reassurance that they are getting what they wanted
4. Yes, this seems fun
5. Yes, this seems stable and dependable
There are actually a lot of aspects.

I see some companies such as Double Down Casino and Huuuuge Games doing everything right on their loading screens.

I also see some companies making a mess of the loading screen with stretched graphics (just unacceptable for iPad to stretch out graphics used in iPhone) and little pizzazz.

In addition to the main App, each slot machine within the App also can have a loading screen.

What is the ideal Loading Screen for each individual Slot Machine App?

This is another very interesting question. There are two broad options
1. First option is to use the same loading screen as the Main Slot Machine App’s Loading Screen
  - Benefits – Familiarity, reinforce the branding, lower size of the App
  - Cons – nothing unique, a bit boring
2. Second option is to use individual loading screens for each Slot Machine App
  - Benefits – more interesting, unique, can add a lot of elements, can set the right mood for that particular slot machine
  - Cons – a lot of work, a lot of graphics and larger App size
While I much prefer the latter, I do understand that time and space restrictions might make it tough/impossible to have a separate loading screen for each individual slot machine.

At the same time, if you can make individual loading screens for each slot machine in your app (or on your website) you can really set the mood and set yourself apart.

This is such a difficult question to answer
1. The Bellagio and The Venetian are probably the two most beautiful ones
2. Never been to the Wynn
3. Caesars Palace was nice
4. Circus Circus was really good. One of my favorites
5. Flamingo is a mixed bag. Really liked it and at the same time it’s not in the most well maintained state
6. Luxor is so beautiful and if you love Egypt or Egyptian themes it is perfect
7. Mandalay Bay is too good. I wish I could have stayed there as perhaps my favorite in terms of being well maintained
8. MGM Grand is very good and polished on all fronts
9. New York New York – very good and also very good buffet
10. Paris. Beautiful and very interesting. Perhaps one of the best at creating a different world
11. The Mirage is very cool. Very cool
I’d probably put The Venetian and The Bellagio as my two favorites. A bunch of friends let me stay with them in their suite at The Venetian and it was top notch.

The Bellagio is also excellent and the swimming pool area and pretty much every part of it is beautiful.

I’d strongly recommend staying at a resort on The Las Vegas Strip if you can afford it as it makes everything else very convenient. If you can afford them then my top 4 recommendations would be
1. The Venetian
2. The Bellagio
3. Wynn
4. Mandalay Bay

  - Luxor, by the way, is very beautiful and an absolute must visit in you are in Vegas

  - This adds a dark and mysterious aspect that many other architectural marvels simply don’t have
